The Later Flight Decides

On a trip where two people arrive separately, only one of the two arrival times is worth planning around, and it is never the earlier one.

Elsewhere

Each entry keeps the date it went up under and the words it went up with. Nothing here changes after it is posted.

There is a habit among couples who meet in the middle, and it produces the same small disappointment every time. The trip is planned off the first arrival. Somebody lands at one in the afternoon, sees a whole evening stretching ahead, and fills it. Then the second flight turns out to be delayed by ninety minutes, and everything that was arranged for the evening has to be dragged an hour and a half to the right while two people are tired and one of them is in a taxi.

One arrival is information, the other is a constraint

The earlier arrival tells you when the room becomes usable. That is genuinely useful: it is the moment a room number exists, a key exists, the heating can go on and the fridge stops being empty. It is not the moment the trip starts. The trip starts when the second person is through the door, and every plan that assumes otherwise is really a plan for one person waiting.

So the arithmetic runs backwards from the later landing. Forty minutes from the airport to the centre on the train on a good run. Longer with a checked bag, longer again at the end of a Friday. Then an hour that belongs to nobody but the two of you, which is not negotiable and should not be scheduled around. Whatever is left after that is the evening you actually have.

The nine o'clock line

A rough rule has emerged from the bookings written here and it is worth stating plainly. If the later flight is on the ground before nine in the evening, the first night can carry an arrangement. If it lands after nine, it cannot, and the attempt to make it will produce an hour that starts at midnight with one person who has been awake since four in the morning.

Couples resist this because the first night feels like the one that matters. It is, which is exactly why it should not be loaded with something that has to start at a particular minute. Push the booking to the second evening and the first night gets to be what it was always going to be anyway: unstructured, slightly disbelieving, and over faster than either of you expected.

What to write, and when

When the arrangement is being made, weeks before anyone travels, the later arrival time goes in the first message with the time zone spelled out. Not both times. The later one. A landing time quoted as half past seven, with no zone attached, is the single most common cause of an hour agreed for the wrong part of the evening.

The confirmed hour is when she is at the door, not when she starts out. In central Amsterdam the gap between a confirmed booking and a knock is forty to sixty minutes, the same in every district and at every hour of the day, so a booking at half past ten means half past ten at your door. Read it that way and the evening plans itself.

The delay that arrives on the day

Flights move, and they move most often for the partner whose flight is already the later one. The response is a message, sent early and sent vague. A line saying the second flight has slipped and you do not yet know by how much is worth more than a precise line sent two hours later, because everything the house can do about the hour gets easier the earlier it hears.

If the delay is large enough to end the evening, the notice scale reads from the moment your message landed rather than from the moment the airline updated a board. More than twenty-four hours out, nothing is kept. Inside the final day, with the therapist not yet on her way, half the deposit is kept and half returns. Once she has set out, it stays, unless somebody else takes the hour, in which case it is repaid whole. One change of date is free with more than a day's notice and a new date inside fourteen days.

The partner who lands first, again

All of this leaves one person with an afternoon to fill in a city they came to for somebody else. That afternoon is stranger than people expect and there is no shame in filling it deliberately rather than walking in circles near the station. Some of the guests here book an hour for themselves in it, which as a single guest with one therapist is 180 euros, arranged in the same thread as the evening and confirmed separately.

Either way, the useful thing that partner can do is administrative and takes five minutes. Room number into the thread. A line about the street door if it locks in the evening. Heating up. Then the board, and the later flight, which is the only one either of you is really watching.
